Green River Lakes
Green River LakesWe spent a night before our hike at the Green River Lakes campground. Despite there being over 40 campsites here and its proximity to town, the campground was mostly empty on a Sunday evening. Unobstructed views of the Milky Way abound.
Squaretop Mountain
Squaretop MountainThe eight miles of trail along the Green River are flat and offer jaw-dropping views of Squaretop Mountain and the Northern Winds right from the get-go.
Dale Lake
Dale LakeThe sun leaves its last marks on Stroud Peak. As beautiful as this sight is, it ranks low on the list of vistas in the Winds.

Indian Basin
Indian BasinA sunset over Fremont and Jackson Peaks. The easy class 3 scramble up the ridgeline to the summit of Fremont is visible on the left side of the frame.
Jackson Peak
Jackson PeakSticking to a rigorous hiking itinerary means waking up before sunrise each day. Once the hiking starts, though, it's all worth it. Case in point: Jackson Peak backlit by golden rays of sunlight.
Harrower Peak
Harrower PeakPerfect reflections of a nearly symmetric mountain. Titcomb Basin and Island Lake draw all the crowds, but Indian Basin is much less crowded and offers spectacular views.
Alpine Lakes Basin
Alpine Lakes BasinTrue off-trail terrain means skirting around sheer cliffs with drops straight into alpine lakes, climbing un-trailed mountain passes, and traversing glaciers. On this day, it took us 11 hours to hike 6 miles.
Alpine Lakes Basin
Alpine Lakes BasinCampsites like this are worth it. We encountered no other hikers for over two days straight, a rare feat in today's age of crowded backcountry destinations.
Douglas Peak Pass
Douglas Peak PassThe steep, class 3 scramble over Douglas Peak Pass connects the Alpine Lakes Basin to Middle Fork Bull Lake Creek.
Golden Lake
Golden LakeThe ascent to Hay Pass gives great views of Golden Lake and Lake Louise. Up the canyon in the background is Douglas Peak Pass and the Alpine Lakes Basin.
